Alfonso of Aragon had it built as a defense structure for the city Harbour. It is located on the promontory of the Pizzuta and in the pasti t used to have a pentagonal shape with towers at the corners and a deep moat around the perimeter. Over the centuries, continuous landslides of the hill brought it at the present state with the remaining four towers and the apparent landslide area to the North. Now wholly owned by the municipality, it was submitted to  restoring interventions by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Architettonici and took back its role of pacific "Sentinel" of the Adriatic Sea. The view from its towers is unique along the Adriatic coast and on clear days it is possible to see the Tremiti Islands and the Gargano promontory.
